On a chain 24 hours a day

Monkeys used and abused to collect coconuts endure some of the worst animal cruelty. For years, we’ve rescued macaques exploited in coconut harvesting. Now, we’re focused on phasing out this practice and, over time, ending it for good.

Horrific living conditions with dirty water and very little food

Over the past year, we’ve rallied support from key stakeholders, including the coconut industry and Thai authorities, to create lasting change. Our mission is to stop vulnerable, endangered pig-tailed macaques from being stolen from the wild, chained, beaten, and forced to climb trees to harvest coconuts. At the same time, we’re pushing for stricter welfare regulations and better licensing to protect macaques who are still suffering.

Together with companies that represent around 90% of Thailand’s coconut exports and in collaboration with Thai authorities, we’re taking real, meaningful action to end this exploitation.

However, with an estimated 3,000 macaques still living in dire conditions, there’s much work ahead. To make this vision a reality, we urgently need funds for land and to build facilities where these primates can recover and live in lifelong sanctuary.

Tijdens ons bezoek aan Cozumel, Mexico,  deze week ontdekte ons team een wanhopige hond die dringend hulp nodig had. Toen we door de mangroven (vochtige, jungle-achtige moerassen) reden, zagen we hem; bedekt met motorolie en weinig meer dan een hoopje botten en haar. In zijn bek had hij een dode opossum, hij was uitgehongerd en wanhopig op zoek geweest naar eten.

Maar hoeveel honger hij ook had, toen hij zag dat ons team stopte om hem te bekijken, kwam hij naar ons toe. Onze plannen voor die dag wijzigden abrupt toen we de hond meenamen en deden wat we konden om hem te redden.

 

 

 

Ik noemde hem Coconut, een vrucht die donker is aan de buitenkant, maar helderwit aan de binnenkant. Dit was zowel van toepassing op de verbazingwekkende transformatie die hij onderging nadat hij onder handen was genomen door ons team als op onze hoop voor een prachtige toekomst.

Dankzij onze geweldige lokale partner, de Humane Society of Cozumel Island (HSCI), krijgt Coconut de zorg die hij zo hard nodig heeft. Hij is positief getest op hartworm, zijn herstel zal dus niet makkelijk worden. Maar het IFAW en de HSCI doen er alles aan om hem te redden.

 

Het was ontzettend inspirerend om getuige te zijn terwijl ons team deze hond redde, een bewijs van de toewijding en de deskundigheid van onze medewerkers. Wetende dat de HSCI voor Coconut zal blijven zorgen, geeft me hoop voor zijn toekomst.
