On the occasion of International Dog Day, Animal Nepal shared a few findings from our Kathmandu Dog Breeding Status Report 2021. Breed dogs are becoming increasingly popular in Nepal and the demand is driving the dog breeding industry, which is completely unregulated. Animal Nepal urges all breeders, buyers, sellers and duty bearers to think about the implications of prioritizing profit, status and fashion over the welfare of animals. Some of the findings were: 56.7% of breeders have no knowledge of animal welfare, 90% of the breeders said the main incentive for dog breeding was money, 93.3% of sellers sell puppies under 8 weeks of age, 59.6% of buyers had little to no information about the breed before buying, 96.6% of buyers had little to no knowledge about the breeding industry, 86.7% of sellers do not have license to sell live animals. This is just a small sample of our findings and the full report will be published shortly. |
