Aid Project 187 – February 2025.

Turkish stray animals have always had it hard, but since the introduction of the 'Massacre law' on July 31, 2024, their situation has deteriorated dramatically.

The law has led to a massive 'clean-up' of the streets and rural areas, with gruwesome images of dying animals and mass graves circulating on social media.

The cruelty these animals endure is unspeakable and the number of animal lives at stake is estimated at 7 million. Klik on the foto to enlarge

Rescuers work day and night to save and secure as many stray animals as possible, both from the streets and from municipal shelters.
Dog catchers usually bring the animals there, where they are often left to their fate (or death), without food and water.
These rescues are both financially and emotionally extremely hard and the rescuers are begging for help.
The situation in Turkey is far beyond animal suffering: the chaos, desperation and endless suffering of the animals and rescuers is enormous and heartbreaking.

In response to this law, some Turkish rescuers decided in August to rent a former cattle farm in Elagzig (Eastern Turkey).
This building, with a terrain of no less than 14,100 square meters, has been converted into a safe haven for stray animals for the past six months.
Volunteers are working day and night to make the terrain ready for use.
At the moment, about 100 dogs and cats have already arrived.
In total, there is room for at least 800 dogs and cats, depending on, among other things, the donations that come to them for this and how quickly everything is realized.
However, the costs for a complete fence and other necessities are high.

The project is led by Kadriye Akdeniz, who has signed a multi-year lease and personally contributed to a partial fence of 2,300 square meters of the site.
About 15 volunteers, consisting of rescuers, friends and family, work together to prepare the complex. For larger jobs, professional workers are hired.

A lot of money is also needed for food, pallets, cages, straw, baskets, blankets, flea control, deworming tablets, medication, etc.
And of course also for transporting the rescued animals and for veterinary costs, because many sheltered animals are in bad shape.

Before the dogs can be placed in the dog village, they must be vaccinated, neutered/spayed, chipped and registered.
This is important to prevent unregistered dogs from being confiscated by dog catchers.
There are also plans to set up a special cat area to help the many Turkish cats in need.

Stichting Dierennood would like to help these wonderful animal helpers, who have been working tirelessly for months to save as many animals as possible and are simply begging for help.
So that their dream can come true to create a safe haven for all those defenseless and innocent Turkish stray animals who are no longer safe on the streets.
Your donation can save many stray animals that would otherwise be lost.
