Wonderful news from the American animal welfare organisation 'Harmony Fund': Thank you for the 12 rescue photos of animals

https://harmonyfund.org/videos/ amazing  video's

We are so blessed to have such a devoted group of supporters who are the HEART of Harmony Fund. Together, we've been helping bring food, shelter, veterinary care and healing to animals across the planet.

#1. Bears Thank You for Restoring Their Habitats!

Three senior bears are sending a great big thank you to everyone who helped them return to their naturalistic enclosures. Last year, we reached out for help for these bears at the ARKA rescue center in Serbia. Earthquakes and storms had severely damaged their outdoor spaces, forcing them to live in caged quarantine areas while ARKA struggled to afford the repairs needed for safe, natural habitats.

Thanks to your generosity—especially our monthly donors—the bears have had a wonderful year. They swim, rub against trees, and sleep under the stars. They are free to be bears again.

Rescued as orphaned cubs from the cruel "dancing bear" trade, they’ve been lovingly cared for by ARKA ever since. When ARKA lost its government subsidy last year, Harmony Fund stepped in to send $1,000 a month for their fruit and vegetable supply. Thanks to you, these bears are not just surviving—they’re thriving.

It's never too late. Harmony Fund believes in bettering the lives of senior animals like these bears. Every day is precious, and their days are now filled with wonder and contentment thanks to all of you.

#2. Road Rescues Going Strong!

Street rescues across the globe have been non-stop lately. We're talking about a rapid fire series of roundups of cats and dogs left in grave danger. The rescue squads in Harmony Fund's league are outdoing themselves right now, and we hardly know how to keep up!
As you see in these snapshots taken in Romania this week, many of the dogs being rescued have clearly been on their own for a very long time. While most people cross the street when they see these dogs, there are others who bend to their knees and offer a soft pair of hands for these poor souls.
Below you see Gulcin, a volunteer for our street cat project in Turkey. Gulcin is one of the most kind hearted people you could ever meet and she is deeply devoted to helping the 800+ cats who receive food and care from Harmony Fund daily.

Ukrainian Heroes Say Thank You!

In Ukraine, we continue to sponsor as much support as we can for the rescue and care of the animal victims of war. This work includes:

1. Funding the expansion of shelters to take in more animals
2. Providing monthly food, flea/tick treatments, spay/neuter and vet care for shelters caring for animals who have nowhere else to go
3. Support for senior citizen volunteers who are feeding packs of homeless animals and offering shelter to as many as they can
Last month many of you made donations for the emergency relocation of Yulia's shelter in Ukraine. We will provide an update on that soon.

A Simple Request

We’re facing a $19,000 deficit for September and have just a few days to raise the funds needed to make grants to all our rescue partners by October 1st. We're trying new fundraising methods and continuing to innovate to meet the animals' needs—but we do need help. While we try not to ask every month, it’s sometimes necessary. We are deeply grateful to our incredible monthly donors—your support is the lifeblood of Harmony Fund. Any additional gift today will help us keep our promises to the many rescue teams counting on us.

Winter Cold

Thank You For These Unstoppable Rescue Missions

Thank you!

"If only you could feel the love emanating from the animals who are safe and cared for through your contribution, your heart would overflow with happiness," Harmony Fund Founder Laura Simpson said yesterday. "Some of the animals jump on us with excitement and want to be held in our arms. Others roll on the ground and ask to be pet. And still others are shy but their body language shows that they are beginning to trust. Animals know when they are in the presence of someone who cares."

Today we thank all of you who have been donating recently and we send out special thanks to our monthly donors. Together, you have been moving mountains for animals and providing food, shelter and veterinary care for homeless animals across several countries. Below are a few quick updates and we are hoping all of you will have a peaceful holiday season.

UPDATE:

Elderly Rescuer Won't Be Alone During Cancer Treatment

Gorica Angelkovska

Recently we brought you the story of Gorica Angelkovska who was terrified of spending another winter alone at her shelter in Serbia. After seeing photos of the physically demanding task of caring for more than 100 rescued animals, many of you rallied to help us hire a worker to manage the primary daily chores. We were very fortunate to find a local man named Mile who likes animals and is willing to work hard. Gorica has been emotionally moved by the generosity of people far, far away who have decided to help her keep the animals tucked securely in her shelter, which has become their home.

Mile and Gorica Angelkovska

Several days after enjoying the bliss of hiring a worker and having reliable help and companionship at the shelter, Gorica was given some devastating news. It seems that she has both esophageal and colon cancer. She is in pain and feeling quite unwell. She is readying for surgery very soon.

Harmony Fund will further extend aid to keep the animals safe while Gorica fights for her life. We are weaving a strong safety net for this rescuer and the animals who rely on her:

1) Our new worker, Mile, will continue to work on the weekdays and assume all animal care tasks.

2) A second man will take on the weekend shifts of feeding and caring for the animals.

3) A caregiver with significant experience caring for the elderly will move in to help care for Gorica for several weeks.

4) A young family (husband, wife and son) have spent some time at the shelter and are considering taking on the daily operations fully if Gorica is unable to carry on. They have experience in animal care, and would add on a boarding area to the shelter so that they could be self sufficient in raising enough funds to make a living and care for all the animals. Gorica is excited about this possibility to have more help.

If it weren't for your help, Gorica would have suffered terrbily this winter trying to save her animals alone. Because of all of you, she has a chance to receive treatment and to have the peace of mind that her animals are safe while she focuses on her own survival. Thank you all for this truly amazing mission of mercy. Gorica never dreamed of such blessings. She is truly amazed.

Our Mission in Ukraine

Rescuer feeding dogs in Ukraine

We're rolling a quilt of care across Ukraine. Each square represents a shelter, a volunteer, a sanctuary—doing their best to care for more animals than ever. We continue to offer food, veterinary care and general support with the costs of care. Here are just a few examples:

Food Distribution:

We're getting pet food out as far and wide as possible.

Shelter Support

This shelter in Kyiv is so thankful to receive bags of kibble.

Overcoming Power Outages

This farm in Kharkiv was provided with hay for the animals plus a generator to pump water during frequent power outages. Watch the uplifting video!

Lone Rescuers

This rescuer Svitlana suffers from a very bad back after many years of heavy lifting at her job at the local grocery store, but the pain does not stop her from caring for a large number of animals. She lives in an apartment and the neighbors get angry at her for feeding the homeless animals outside. She allows them to take shelter in the basement of the building now that snow is falling. We have helped with food for all the animals she cares for.

Sheep Rescue

Our beloved teammates at the Ugolyok Farm Sanctuary were so grateful to have our help rescuing 14 sheep who were hog tied in the back of carts and headed for slaughter. The sheep happily scurried into the rescue center barn when they were untied. Much more work lies ahead of us in Ukraine.

Woman Flees into Forest with Hundreds of Dogs, Cats and Horses

Krasimira Spasova (Krassy) with her rescue dogs

Years ago, Krasimira Spasova (Krassy) lived in a Bulgarian village in her lovely grandmother's house. She started with about a dozen dogs and cats she had saved from terrible circumstances, but soon the word began to spread about her sweetness, and before long, neighbor after neighbor began abandoning animals at her gate. It didn't take long for the number of animals to swell, and those same neighbors started complaining and threatening to poison the animals.

House

To save herself and the animals, Krassy was forced to flee to the wilderness. Strong and determined, she bought a dilapidated house in a remote mountain area. No road. No running water. No warmth. Krassy braved the cold and isolation to stay true to the animals to whom she promised lifelong protection.

Krassy and Rescue dogs

"Here in Bulgaria, the situation with homeless animals is very scary and the streets are full of hungry, beaten, run over, shot, and tortured animals," volunteer Lyudmila Lyubenova explains. "But not all people here are bad. Many happy animals saved from the street are living free and happy thanks to an angel named Krasimira."

Krassy and Rescue dogs in the snow

"Even in her remote area, every day people dump new animals to her, puppies, old dogs, babies in boxes and bags, pregnant mothers, and sick or unfit hunting dogs," Lyudmila continues. "She has no strength and no means, but she cannot let them die, thrown out in the middle of nowhere. The number of rescued animals is getting bigger and bigger. The cost of treatment and castration to clinics is piling up and Krassy is powerless to stop this avalanche. Although she has managed to find homes for more than 200 dogs, people in the area keep dumping their animals around the rescue center."

"For 2 years Krassy has been trying to raise funds to drill the upper area and to not have to carry water in bottles for miles. The amount needed is about $6,000. Before drilling, however, a fence has to be made for the dogs in the upper area so that they are not run over by heavy machinery when drilling begins. The fence is almost ready with a lot of effort put into it, but there is still a little more to go and time is running out. Soon winter will come and Krassy and all the rescued souls will be left in the ice trap of winter, with no food, no water, no road, and no heating for her. After12-15 hours of work she'll have to go home to a freezing house. In winter the food trucks can't go there. It becomes an icy nightmare with 300 dogs, 10 horses, many cats, and one woman alone in the icy winter. Please help, winter is coming and it is scary and hopeless..."

Krassy and Rescue dogs

Krassy hasn't had a true Christmas in many years, but on Sunday morning, we would like to surprise her with the news of a big donation to drill the well (possibly in the spring if it can't be done immediately) and to hopefully buy a warm stove and pay some veterinary expenses. She is one of those invisible heroes that no one has heard of, but who is doing gold-medal rescue work. Perhaps her day has finally arrived. We would love to help her. To help Krassy, you can donate to our Winter Rescue fund.

Elderly Woman Terrified of Facing Winter Alone at Animal Shelter

Help Gorcia's Animals in Serbia

In the small Serbian village of Drazevac, 74-year-old Gorica braces herself with a stick as more than one hundred dogs circle her legs to reach the pail of dog food she is carrying. The air is cold this morning at Gorica’s home-based refuge that is safe haven to dogs and cats who have no families to care for them. Gorica is beaming with pride that the animals here are not caged. She prizes their freedom and emotional wellbeing, yet she no longer has the physical strength she once did. The chores are hard, very hard. Last winter, Gorica broke her leg on the ice and she’s deeply afraid of what this winter will bring if she must face another year all alone. Harmony Fund would like to sponsor a full-time worker to come and help care for the dogs and we’re asking for donations to help.

—With Winter Coming, Gorica Needs Help—

“My greatest fear in the winter is not being able to care for them the way they deserve,” Gorica said last week. “I am alone. It gets hard to walk around the shelter, to clean and feed them. The concrete gets frozen and slippery. I fell many times and fear what will happen to my dogs if I get injured. Who will help me to take care of them? It is already very difficult for me to lift buckets, to carry garbage and anything heavy. In the winter it all gets ten times harder. I desperately need a helping hand. Having to spend most of the day with them outside, even some of the nights during the storm (the dogs get anxious and scared and they need me), makes my bones get really cold and I get sick. I can’t take sick days. I have nobody else to help and just have to keep on. I am getting very old. I am very worried about getting through this winter.”

—What We Can Do to Help—

In order to keep Gorica and the animals safe, Harmony Fund is seeking monthly supporters to rally around Gorica. It will cost about $1000 a month for a worker to be at the shelter daily to take over the hard, daily chores in caring for the 25 cats and 137 dogs here. It’s a certainty that more residents will abandon puppies, kittens and injured animals at the shelter gate in the months ahead, so we’ll need to be ready for them as well. We will pay the shelter worker on the 1st day of each month, so we’re hoping some of you might even be able to sign up to give an automatic monthly donation so that we have funds to pay this expense.

Monthly donations will multiply your impact!

—Gorica’s Greatest Wish—

“It is my greatest wish, to be able to sit with the dogs and cats here and give them the attention and love they need,” Gorica concluded. “I want people to know that I will do everything in my power, to my last breath, everything I can, to help as many animals as possible.”
