What a month May was! We had much-needed rainfall and a particularly busy time at our Tiger Rescue Centre. From emergency surgeries to new friendships blossoming, there were lots of exciting goings-on with our rescued tigers. Click the image above to watch our World Otter Day 2024 video Stories you made possible in May: Rambo's eye surgery, a success! 21-year-old tiger, Rambo, has been blind in one eye for as long as he's been with us. However, he recently developed a nasty ulcer in that eye, and the best course of action was to remove it. Read the story here. Rescued elephant, Mae Moey, started to make friends Mae Moey, an elephant seized from wildlife traffickers has started to make friends with some of our Project 4 herd, including Alicia and Malai. It's such a joy to see her bonding with other rescued elephants after her terrible ordeal. Read more about our Elephant Refuge.  Mang Mee and Hai Chok successfully introduced These two tigers, rescued in Dec 2023 from a terrible tiger farm, are relishing their newfound sanctuary freedom. They are soaking up the sun and each other's companionship. It's exciting to watch their blossoming friendship. Read more about our Tiger Rescue Centre. Our PAT Clinic continues to reduce the suffering of homeless dogs and cats 4,250 sterilised! Our People and Animals Thailand (PAT) team are tackling the issue of stray animal overpopulation in Thailand. Find out more about and support this life-changing project.  Salamas went out in the rain!  Since Salamas came to WFFT, she's been gradually adapting to a life free from abuse and enjoying the sensation of grass under her paws and rain on her fur. In fact, we were fortunate enough to witness her first ever experience of sitting in the rain. Donate for tigers like Salamas here. New rescued tiger, A-Ngun swam for hours! Once the door opened for the 1st time, A-Ngun darted outside to explore. The instant her paws made contact with the grass, she leapt up with surprise and joy. Dieren in 'Horror' dierentuin in Gaza krijgen eindelijk hulp.......veel foto's

Zoal ik al vele malen heb geschreven, stichting Vier Voeters is één van mij favoriete dierenwelzijnsorganisatie. Ik heb het geluk gehad een paar jaar als vrijwilligster mee te mogen draaien op het kantoor in Amsterdam. Bij deze organisatie blijft geen cent aan de strijkstok hangen. Zeer bedreven mensen met dierenwelzijn hoog in het vaandel. Voor wie nog een paar euro over heeft ?

VIER VOETERS biedt noodhulp in Khan Younis dierentuin in Gaza

 

Amsterdam, 20 april 2015 – De internationale dierenwelzijnsorganisatie VIER VOETERS heeft gereageerd op de hulpkreet uit de dierentuin in Gaza die in recente mediaberichten is bestempeld als ‘de ergste dierentuin in de wereld’.  De dierentuin verdiende deze twijfelachtige eer na publicatie van foto’s van dode en gemummificeerde dieren in verblijven naast levende dieren.

 

De situatie in Khan Younis bleek even gruwelijk als de eerdere rapporten suggereerden. De weinige overlevende dieren hebben geen voedsel, nauwelijks drinkwater en geen veterinaire zorg. De verblijven zijn bedekt met afval en puin. De dierentuin is niet meer in staat om de dierverzorgers te betalen. Dierentuinmanager Ziyad Oweida: "We zijn erg opgelucht dat VIER VOETERS ons nu helpt. Er is veel media-aandacht geweest, maar niemand kwam ons daadwerkelijk helpen."

 

De dierentuin heeft geen financiële middelen. De nog levende grote katachtigen - een leeuwin en een tijger - zijn sterk vermagerd. Vele andere dieren zijn al een hongerdood gestorven. VIER VOETERS directeur Inez de Ligt: " Ons team verleent veterinaire zorg. Zo wordt de leeuwin behandeld voor  een ernstige oorinfectie en krijgt de lama medicijnen tegen een vervelende parasieteninvasie. Daarnaast zorgt VIER VOETERS de komende maanden voor voedselleveringen. Omdat de dierentuin niet beschikt over koelkasten of vriezers zal wekelijks vers voedsel geleverd worden. "

 

 

Vanwege het aanhoudende conflict in de Gazastrook is toegang tot de regio uiterst moeilijk. VIER VOETERS is de enige dierenwelzijnsorganisatie die van de autoriteiten officiële toestemming heeft ontvangen. In de herfst van 2014 bood VIER VOETERS ook al noodhulp aan een andere dierentuin in Gaza. Drie leeuwen uit de zwaar beschadigde Al Bisan dierentuin werden toen overgebracht naar een opvangcentrum in Jordanië en de overige dieren kregen voedsel en veterinaire zorg.

 

Net als in 2014 wordt de huidige actie ondersteund door de Franse dierenbeschermingsorganisatie "30 millions d'amis".
