Sorry, geen tijd om te vertalen maar neemt niet weg dat het prachtig nieuws is. Geniet ervan !

Building a New Shelter in Egypt

Hoda Mklad and her rescue dogs im Egypt

With the light of a million rescuers blinking like stars in the night sky, it’s nearly impossible to distinguish among them. But look closely and you’ll see that the glimmer shared by Harmony Fund’s heroes is strong, steady and oh-so-bright...

Hoda Mklad is a long-time animal activist and rescuer who runs the Freedom Shelter in Cairo, Egypt. Though we have helped her for a few years, she made a deep impression on us last year when she carefully descended a steep embankment, entered waist-deep mucky water and made her way over to a trapped white dog on the opposite side. Completely blind to the unseen dangers in that water and the risks of a bite from a cornered animal, Hoda put the life of a stray dog before her own. Yes, fairly quickly it became clear that Hoda was one of us.

“I am very happy when I am surrounded by strange dogs,” Hoda explains while feeding a new group of stray dogs on the steps of a building in Cairo. “My cart is full of their sustenance every day. They see me like they knew me for years. I saw them and I was happy for them. I touch the body of every dog and I feed them like they are my babies.”

Right now, Hoda is moving all 310 dogs from her Freedom Shelter to a new location in Giza after the municipal building department in Cairo retroactively issued a ruling that the land of her present shelter could not be built upon, forcing her to have to swiftly assemble fencing, housing, drainage, water, electricity, quarantine areas and a storage area in a new location. All of this sits on top of the normally challenging task of providing food, sanitation and veterinary medicine for the pack. This has pushed Hoda’s rescue center well past its means and into a very precarious situation.

The good news is that Harmony Fund specializes in throwing a sturdy lifeline to rescuers hanging on by a thread. We are doing all we can to help with the costs of the new shelter and sustaining the dogs’ everyday needs. Last night, the first of the dogs were transported to the new location and every nose was pressed to the ground, carefully inspecting their new home.

The new shelter has shade trees to help ease the heat of summer and ample room for the dogs to run and play and nap. Sturdy walls and gates will keep the dogs safe from the outside world. This oasis will host the forgotten dogs of a city where many people classify dogs as garbage. But not here. At Hoda’s shelter, each and every soul is truly treasured. Old dogs, feral dogs and dogs with cancer get the special care they need. They aren’t simply thrown into the pack, but seen as individuals. And although most will never be adopted and get the chance to live with a family of their own, Hoda is their family.

“Thank you, you are angels,” Hoda said in a message to Harmony Fund supporters. “You helped me. right on time. Your support always makes me feel strong.”

Food Drop for Wildlife Center

Feeding animals at Wildlife Center

The Amazon Shelter in Peru takes in wild animals painted in a rainbow of fur and feathers, each as beautiful as the next. These animals were stolen from the forest by traffickers who hoped to sell them illegally. The center nurtures the animals until they can return to the best place on earth…home.

Supplying all the needed fruits and vegetables for the wild survivors has reached a tipping point as the pandemic has eliminated most of the international volunteer support and donations that typically keep this refuge alive. In March, the center asked us for an emergency grant to help make sure there are no missed meals and we provided fresh produce for an array of hungry residents.

These animals have already gone through so much, being taken from their family units and undergoing the trauma of capture. The very best we can do is to keep them safe until they can return to their natural habitats and form new connections with others of their species. We would like to help The Amazon Shelter again soon with more fresh produce to keep the animals healthy while readying for their return to the forest.

Small Spay/Neuter Projects Will Have Massive Impact

Aleksandra Neskov in Bosnia

“I hope you will remember me. You helped me a lot with food for cats in a critical moment in covid virus in April when all was closed,” Bosnian rescuer Aleksandra Neskov wrote to us recently. “For 10 years I am volunteering in saving street cats but I get never help for that from my country or local city. In previous years, I had support from Italian volunteers for food, but as corona virus hit, food donation doesn’t come. I have to search different way for food donation so my cats can survive these months. I have about 70 cats that I’m feeding now plus foster cats and street colonies of cats. I am very desperate and don't know how to reach food for them in this hard time.”

“The main problem is that I have to do spaying and neutering for the cats. Its March, and if I do not sterilize them, it will be a disaster. I did 25 cats and there are 28 left, but since I didn't pay for the old ones yet and am in debt for their surgeries, no new sterilizations can be done.”

Rescued cats

Despite the fact that we did not have funds readily available for this project, Harmony Fund contributed as much as possible because we are keenly aware of the massive domino effect of un-spayed cats. In just seven years, one un-spayed female cat and her kittens will together produce 420,000 cats.

Taking care of cats

Already this year, the Harmony Fund has contributed for spay/neuter projects for homeless cats in Bosnia, Turkey, the USA and Venezuela.

Joy Overtakes Rescued Dogs

A rescue dog happily laying on his bed

Each of these dogs from Romania is truly flabbergasted at the happiness they’ve found! They feel the pulse of love in the arms of families who have adopted them, families who won’t ever leave them.

Rescued dogs

All the dogs had a mother at one time, but somewhere along their journey, they ended up alone in a place of grave danger. The dogs you see here came from Romania’s savage public dog pounds or from a catastrophic private shelter in which we seized animals under police escort.

We want to express special thanks to all our monthly supporters, participants in our Superhero Pets and Pet Memorial programs for helping to make this work possible.

Food Drive For Romanian Animals

Rescue dogs in Romania

We have our hands full right now as we try to feed a great many animals on the street, at shelters, and in the public dog pounds of Romania. It’s a mission of epic proportions and we need help. Any donation will contribute to this battle against hunger.

Please have a look at these photos of some of the animals who will benefit from your help. You can see they range from elderly dogs being rescued from the pound, to very young puppies and everything in between.

Feeding street dogs in Romania

Harmony Fund is a small charity, trying to deliver aid to underdog animal rescue squads across the planet. This region is among our most challenging. Your donations today will provide food immediately for our partners at Every Life Counts rescue center and Fundatia Sky rescue center, both of whom are very active in providing food well beyond the gates of their own shelters. Feeding homeless cats, dogs and farm animals has always been a cornerstone of Harmony Fund’s work in Romania, and we aim to continue that during the month of April. We're also buying more palettes of food for dogs who are trapped in neglectful dog pounds where only small bits of unpalatable food are provided by the government workers. And, Harmony Fund is collaborating with Polaris of Romania and Help for Afumati Dogs of Germany to continue providing foster care and adoption for the long, long, long line of dogs awaiting our help. While the magnitude of the problems facing homeless animals in Romania is daunting, we hope that the photos we share today will show you the true power of your donations at work.

Thank you all.

We Need You Now

Every month, we face significant costs for spay/neuter, sheltering, vaccines, food and veterinary care for each batch of animals we take under our wing. We try to give them as much love as possible. To help us with the costs of care for these animals in Romania and beyond, please donate here.
