From the day she was born on the street, to the moment she was hit by a car, she’s been all alone in the world. Her story is typical of millions of street dogs in Thailand, hundreds of whom now live at the Soi Dog shelter. Will you please show a dog like Zadonin that she is loved? She had sustained serious injuries as a result of the car accident and was scared and confused. When she arrived at our shelter, our vets discovered she had a spinal fracture. Op de woonzorglocaties van Domus Magnus wonen naast ouderen ook enkele gezelschapsdieren. De liefde van een dier is onvoorwaardelijk. Een huisdier kan de mens niet vervangen, maar is vaak een goede aanvulling op het leven

.

Inmiddels is door verschillende (wetenschappelijke) onderzoeken bewezen dat dieren een positief effect hebben op mensen. Huisdieren vervullen, volgens Enders-Slegers, vooral de basisbehoeften emotionele nabijheid en de behoefte van ouderen om te zorgen. Het zorgen voor en verantwoordelijk zijn voor een huisdier vergroot de zelfwaardering. De indirecte effecten van het hebben van een (huis)dier zijn onder andere dagstructuur en lichaamsbeweging, maar vooral ook bescherming tegen eenzaamheid en depressieve gevoelens. Het is dus niet alleen beter voor de gezondheid, het zorgt ook voor een basisbehoefte waar veel ouderen behoefte aan hebben: aandacht!

De box

Iedere locatie van Domus Magnus heeft een vierkante, plexiglazen box met daarop een foto en een tekst. De kubus staat op een centrale plek waar iedereen wordt uitgenodigd om kaarten in te vullen met complimenten en verbeteringen. Op woonzorglocatie Villa Molenenk in Deventer heeft een bewoonster een kaart ingevuld. Zij gaf als suggestie de komst van een levend, harig en aaibaar beest voor wat extra 'leven' in de brouwerij. Ze heeft met haar man jarenlang de halve wereld rondgereisd. Ze is nu alleen en heeft geen kinderen. Toen een medewerker op een dag een puppy meenam, bleek zij direct verkocht: “Mijn man en ik zijn nooit aan een hond toegekomen, dat is het enige dat ik heb gemist.”

Wat een geluk dat er zoveel medewerkers met een hond zijn. De afgelopen weken zijn Senna (golden retriever), Jagger (Tibetaanse terriër), Binky (havanezer), een langharige teckel en een bordercollie op visite geweest bij de bewoonster. Dit zijn dierbare ontmoetingen bij de open haard waar zij genieten van elkaars gezelschap.

Rescueing an animal in need is one of the most selfless and rewarding things that a person can do, particularly when it comes to very young animals, who require constant care and attention. After all, a bottle feeding puppy or kitten can be just as much work as a human baby! But also just as rewarding.

So when this Imgur user got a call from her father and learned that one of the newborn kittens in his yard wasn’t doing well, she made the one hour drive to see if there was anything that she could do.

When she first saw him, this poor fella was only a month old. He was filthy and suffering from mange. Plus, there was a large growth on his chest.    

 

First, they needed to give this little guy a bath. Afterwards, she wrapped him in a fuzzy sock to keep him warm.

The poor thing was so hungry he devoured his kitten food. They decided to name him Finley Cooper.

The vet gave him antibiotics and treated him for worms. He also drained the abscess on his chest. But because he was so young, he was unable to take antifungal medicine, meaning that the mange would have to wait. His kind new mom knitted him a little sweater in the meantime, to keep him warm.

Soon, he was feeling better. In a bold move, he decided to cross the gate and introduce himself to his new Pit Bull sibling, Dina. Dina instantly fell in love with the little one and quickly made friends with the sick little kitten.

Soon, it was time for another trip to the vet and they were finally able to treat his mange. He needed a bath in special shampoo every day, but soon, his fur started growing back.

Once he was feeling better, Finley started to get all kinds of spunky.

He had also decided that sleeping with Dina was the best spot in the house.

Once his fur came in, his beautiful smoky grey color started to shine.

These days, Finley is a good as new, enjoying playtime and naptime as much as any other kitten. He also loves to lay in the sun.
