Weekly update from Safe Haven for Donkeys in Gaza: Mobile vet teams are working 24/7 providing first aid to donkeys, mules and horses

 

Today, I want to share a small window into what our mobile vet team is seeing and doing in Gaza right now. I hope the photos and short video show the reality of our work on the ground. Conditions remain incredibly tough, but thanks to your support, our mobile team is still there – helping wherever they can, providing first aid to donkeys, mules and horses every day. With warmest wishes, Wendy Safe Haven UK Office  Our update from Gaza Despite incredibly poor weather conditions in recent weeks, our mobile veterinary team continues their work across Gaza. Encouragingly, we are beginning to see visible improvements compared to the darkest periods of the war. Our team keeps smiling through the difficult conditions. In Gaza, donkeys are still the backbone of daily survival. They carry people, food, belongings and vital supplies through extremely difficult terrains. For many families, a single donkey is their only source of income – and their only way to keep going. Donkeys in Gaza are used to carry people, belongings and supplies. At the moment, our team is working mainly in Khan Younis and Deir Al-Balah, focusing on the most overcrowded refugee camps. As displacement continues, the number of donkeys and other working animals in these areas has risen sharply, placing huge strain on already limited resources. Increasingly we're seeing that trauma that goes beyond physical injury. With the ceasefire still in place, our team can work with greater confidence and reach more animals. Farmers and owners are actively seeking out our mobile vet clinics, and the number of animals waiting for treatment continues to grow. Checking wounds and giving essential first aid. One of the most serious challenges we face now is emotional and psychological trauma in animals, particularly donkeys. Many have experienced starvation, exhaustion, fear, violence and the loss of their offspring. These experiences affect their behaviour and ability to cope. In the refugee camps, the number of donkeys and equines has increased sharply - and with this the need for veterinary care has increased too. More and more owners now come to us not because an animal is injured, but because it is withdrawn, fearful or distressed. They ask for help and guidance. While resources are limited, our team is continuing to adapt, doing everything possible to support both animals and the people who rely on them. Thank You  Everything we do is made possible by you.
