Heftige undercover video: In Australië snijden de boeren de kont af van de merino schapen zonder verdoving

Het merinoschaap is een van de bekendste schapenrassen in de wereld. Dankzij de vele huidplooien produceert één schaap wel vijf kilo wol per jaar. De wol heeft een zeer fijne structuur en wordt veel gebruikt voor kleding omdat deze wol niet kriebelt.

Zonder verdoving een stuk uit de kont gesneden !!

Dodelijke larven Australië produceert ongeveer 80% van alle merinowol dat gebruikt wordt voor de productie van textiel. Het achterwerk van het schaap kan ontlasting en urine bevatten waar bromvliegen door aangetrokken worden. De bromvlieg legt eitjes in de achterste huidplooien van het merinoschaap waarvan de larven bij uitkomst het schaap gaan aanvreten. Dit is voor het schaap zeer pijnlijk en uiteindelijk zelfs dodelijk.

Mulesing

 Om deze reden passen veel Australische boeren mulesing toe op het schaap. Mulesing is het wegsnijden van huid rond het achterwerk van een schaap. Dit gebeurt vaak zonder verdoving. De verwijderde huid zal minder snel vliegen trekken omdat er geen urine en ontlasting aan blijft hangen. Mulesing wordt vaak tegelijkertijd gedaan met het afknippen van de staarten en castratie, wat ook zonder verdoving gebeurt. Alleen in Australië, waar het probleem met de bromvlieg het grootste is, wordt mulesing toegepast.  

Verbroken belofte

In 2004 hebben Australische boeren toegezegd om in 2010 te stoppen of minderen met mulesing. De industrie heeft echter hun belofte gebroken en nog steeds worden elk jaar miljoenen lammetjes gemulesed. Recente gegevens wijzen zelfs uit dat ongeveer 10 miljoen merinolammetjes elk jaar worden gemulesed. Mulesing kan worden vermeden door bijvoorbeeld schapen met minder huidplooien te gebruiken. Sommige boeren zijn daar al op overgestapt met goede resultaten. Veel andere boeren doen dit simpelweg niet omdat ze bang zijn zo minder wol per schaap te krijgen en dus minder inkomsten krijgen. Helaas loopt werelds grootste wolleverancier Australië nog steeds flink achter op bijvoorbeeld Nederland als het gaat om dierenwelzijn. Er bestaan nog steeds geen wettelijke eisen hoe een procedure als mulesing moet worden uitgevoerd en er is tevens geen wettelijke verplichting om pijnverdoving toe te passen. Undercover onderzoek van onze collega’s van PETA toont gruwelijke beelden van Australische schapenscheerders die de schapen zwaar mishandelen.


Wat kun jij doen? Er bestaan kledingbedrijven die enkel met mulesing-vrije leveranciers werken. Enkele voorbeelden hiervan zijn Esprit, H&M, Benetton en Vanillia. Dierenmishandeling kun je natuurlijk nooit 100% uitsluiten wanneer je producten van dieren koopt. Twijfel je of jouw kledingstuk van merinowol wel mulesing-vrij en diervriendelijk verkregen is, neem dan contact op met het betreffende kledingbedrijf. Vraag hen tevens hoe zij kunnen garanderen dat hun wol op een diervriendelijke manier is verkregen. Beter nog, koop geen merinowol en zeker geen Uggs. Die zijn gevoerd met deze wol. Wat gebeurde er nadat de video aan de inwoners van Australië werd getoond?

Global reaction to PETA’s video exposé has been a firestorm of outrage—industry groups and politicians condemned the documented behavior, and officials on two continents have opened investigations.

The Shearing Contractors’ Association of Australia announced that it is “appalled by the footage” and “applauds the investigation.” WoolProducers Australia President Geoff Fisken said the behavior shown in the video was “unacceptable and unsupportable.” “We are shocked and appalled by the footage,” he said in a statement. Mick Keogh, executive director of the Australian Farm Institute, wrote that “perhaps the very best thing that could happen in response to the PETA footage is for the responsible sheep owners and shearers to be successfully prosecuted.” Ian Feldtmann, livestock president of the Victorian Farmers Federation, wrote that he was “sickened” by the footage and is “glad to hear … governments have launched animal welfare investigations in response to PETA’s footage.” One Australian shearing contractor said, “That video is disgusting and those people should be prosecuted.”

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Australia confirmed that the suspects “will be investigated” for potential violations of the New South Wales and South Australia cruelty-to-animals statutes, and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries is investigating the matter in Victoria.

Sen. Lee Rhiannon of New South Wales rejected Australian Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce’s criticisms of the exposé, calling his attack “crude” and stating that Joyce “should be working … to improve animal welfare instead of protecting perpetrators of animal cruelty.” Australian Capital Territory Primary Industries Minister Shane Rattenbury added that the video showed “senseless brutality” and said that Joyce “toed a dangerous line between condemning the illegal conduct of some, and encouraging others to keep their abuse and their cruelty behind closed doors. Barnaby Joyce needs to stop blame shifting.”

Joyce announced that “the Australian Government does not … condone the mistreatment of animals.” “I am confident this will be investigated appropriately,” he wrote on his website. “There is no doubt these images are disturbing.”

In the U.S., numerous law-enforcement investigations are underway in Wyoming and Colorado, where Moffat County Sheriff Tim Jantz said that the video “is highly concerning and we are taking it very seriously.” “If our investigation shows it is warranted, we will file any appropriate criminal charges,” he said.

An American Sheep Industry Association representative stated, “Rough handling of animals that might result in the injury of a sheep is … unacceptable .… Kicking, throwing and poking the eyes of sheep are also unacceptable practices.” The executive director of the Colorado Wool Growers Association joined PETA’s call for prosecution and said of the video, “Everything about that was wrong.” The executive director of the Wyoming Wool Growers Association added, “We do not condone or support the actions of anyone that results in the abuse of sheep.”
