In Cassie's story below, you see a girl emaciated by mange--it's just one of the effects of this devastating parasite. But what we also have found through treating thousands of mange cases over 23 years, dogs who are nourished and otherwise healthy often do not become ravaged by the parasite. Many more dogs carry the parasite than those who are overtaken by it. This is why the wonderful feeders in the community are helping in ways that they may not even realize. Millions of ordinary folk across India feed the street dogs. They act out of tremendous kindness, sometimes facing scorn by neighbors who don't like dogs and who don't realize that Indian laws protect the rights of people to feed the street animals.

Our reports about rescues can blur the reality that for many street dogs, life holds joy, intellectual challenges, dramas and comforts. Just as they are. But of course, when they're in trouble, you've made it possible for the animals of Udaipur to get back on their feet, and back to the happiness that is the birthright of all of us.

Baby--the sweetest bull calf--is the furthest from "worthless" we can imagine! |
Baby was abandoned on the road by his owner. A bull calf is usually worthless to a dairy farmer, and though most bull calves perish in other ways, some are cast onto the road. Baby didn't understand traffic and probably stood innocently in the road as a motorist flew by, badly injuring his face. Baby's wounds were serious. We were not sure if he would be able to eat; if he would have the heart to eat. He'd need extra loving care to brighten his spirits enough to pull through. Our wound dressings were not just a time for treatment, but also a chance to reassure Baby, to make sure that his mother--wherever she was--was not the only one who loves him. He bonded immediately with other animals in treatment, and when he healed, the sunshine broke through! Meet sweetheart Baby now! Someday the whole world will understand what you already know: all animals are precious - Please Donate. |

Cassie turned from bare bones to bright eyed and bushy-tailed! |
Cassie's body was almost skin and bones and the mange parasites were killing her slowly. At the time of her rescue, all her strength was gone. For those who are not familiar with the ravages of mange--it is a parasite which burrows beneath the skin. The starved condition of Cassie is probably because as the parasites advanced she ran and ran in an effort to flee from the terrible itchiness, and too, has scratched herself into exhaustion. Watch as this frail sweetheart regains not just fur and muscle tone, but twinkling joy. Help us bring them back into the light of life. Please Donate. |
