Horrific events called “pig wrestling” and “hog-bagging” exploit young pigs who are abused and tormented for public amusement. They are being planned again for 2026 in Texas and Wyoming. Defenseless pigs are treated like disposable props, enduring repeated attacks and injuries as spectators watch. Urge event organizers and community leaders to end these spectacles of cruelty and brutality. 

Pig Wrestling, Teton County Fair — July 18–26, 2026 (WY)

After a six-year hiatus, the Teton County Commissioners voted 3-1 to reinstate pig “wrestling” at the Teton County Fair. Children and women will chase and tackle pigs, then force them into a mud pit or barrel. Opponents of the decision included a veterinarian who called pig “wrestling” outdated and needlessly violent, comparing it to ancient gladiator fights and emphasizing that modern understanding of animal intelligence and suffering should compel society to abandon such cruelty.

While these are the major 2026 events, similar hog-bagging, pig-wrestling, and other forms of animal abuse are planned at county fairs and rodeos nationwide. Please speak out in your community to stop them.

Like all animals, pigs are sensitive and emotionally complex, and they have been shown to be more intelligent than a 3-year-old human child. Yet they are brutalized and mocked for trivial pastimes at rodeos and county fairs before being killed.

It is long past time to end the use of animals for anything, much less for entertainment. Farmed animals endure horrendous abuse and pain in all animal farming, including forced breeding, mutilations, separation from their families, extreme confinement, and slaughter. In addition, countless animals are subjected to further suffering for youth contests, research, and at state and county fairs. They are the most tortured and killed animals on the planet, and each deserves our defense.

Thanks to animal advocates and undercover investigators like Unparalleled Suffering, who witness, document, and speak out against this unconscionable and legal torment of animals, public awareness is growing. More people are recognizing that no tradition, habit, or profit justifies harming any animal. 

These events terrorize pigs, some barely a month old, as they are chased, slammed to the ground, yanked by tails, legs, and ears, and dragged across arenas, as they scream and desperately try to escape. Witnesses have reported seeing pigs denied food and water, and often with bloody wounds or limping. After these brutal assaults, like all farmed animals, they are later forced into the hell of a slaughterhouse. Multiple events occurred in 2023, 2024, and 2025, with more now scheduled for 2026.

Brennan’s Bar Racing Turtles Rescued by Freedom Farms

In Defense of Animals is proud to announce the rescue of nine red-eared slider turtles from the former Los Angeles bar Brennan’s, which permanently closed at the end of 2025 after decades of hosting controversial turtle races. For more than 50 years, the bar’s turtle racing events drew crowds and became part of its public identity, but animal advocates long raised concerns about the welfare and exploitation of the turtles used for entertainment. Following sustained pressure from In Defense of Animals and other animal protection organizations, the practice ultimately ended.

After Brennan’s closed, In Defense of Animals worked directly with the previous ownership to coordinate a safe rehoming plan for the turtles at Freedom Farms, the organization’s sanctuary on California’s Central Coast. The rescue marks a new chapter for these animals — one centered on safety, dignity, and compassionate care.

Freedom Farms is already home to a growing family of rescued animals, including 25 cows, five peacocks, a former racehorse, a donkey, cats, and thriving native wildlife. Now, our sanctuary staff is transforming a small pond into a carefully designed habitat where the turtles can safely bask, swim, and thrive in a peaceful natural environment with both shade and sunlight.

 

Our vision for the project goes beyond rescue alone. The future turtle habitat will also serve as an educational and reflective space for visitors, offering an opportunity to connect with these often-overlooked animals, better understand what it takes to be a responsible guardian when adopting an exotic animal, and become an ethical steward for wildlife coexistence.

While construction and habitat improvements are underway, the turtles are receiving individualized care and close monitoring in a quiet indoor setup designed to reduce stress and support their transition to sanctuary life.

Gevangen orka Toki-tae (ook bekend als Lolita en Sk'aliCh'elh-

tenaut), die in de kleinste tank in Noord-Amerika woont in het Miami

 Seaquarium in Miami, Florida, heeft misschien eindelijk haar kans om

 Naar huis te gaan na maar liefst 52 jaar lijden in gevangenschap!

Op een persconferentie op televisie deze week, de nieuwe eigenaren van het Seaquarium, The Dolphin Company, brak het nieuws dat een team van onafhankelijke veterinaire experts nu is uitgenodigd om Lolita te beoordelen! Ze beloofden voortdurende transparantie over haar gezondheid en die van alle andere dieren in Miami Seaquarium. Dit is een keerpunt, een totale breuk met de manier waarop het Seaquarium heeft gefunctioneerd gedurende de 52 jaar van Lolita's gevangenschap daar!

Begin maart verleende het Amerikaanse ministerie van Landbouw een vergunning aan The Dolphin Company op voorwaarde dat Lolita niet zou worden getoond. Activisten over de hele wereld vieren het nieuws van haar pensionering en dringen erop aan dat ze nu wordt teruggebracht naar haar geboortewateren in de Salish Sea voor de kust van de staat Washington. Een samenwerking tussen verschillende NGO's, samen met de regering van Miami-Dade County, regelt de details voor haar pensionering en hoopvolle terugkeer naar huis, en filantroop Pritam Singh heeft zojuist $ 1 miljoen aangeboden om het te laten gebeuren!

Er zijn nog steeds obstakels in de weg van Lolita's terugkeer naar de Salish Zee. Pro-gevangenschap woordvoerders en critici van het pensioenplan hebben bezwaren geuit. Ze beweren dat Lolita het transport mogelijk niet overleeft, of dat ze gevaarlijke ziekteverwekkers naar de wateren van haar familie kan brengen, of eraan wordt blootgesteld zodra ze beweegt.

Om deze mensen te weerleggen, zegt Howard Garrett van Orca Network, 's werelds toonaangevende expert op het gebied van Lolita's familie, de Southern Resident Killer Whales:

 "Probeer haar alsjeblieft beter te leren kennen - niet alleen hoe ze zich daar in Miami gedraagt, maar leer meer over haar familie de Zuidelijke bewoners, en haar soort, Orcinus orca, en hun verbazingwekkende capaciteiten en intelligentie."

 Hij, en het legioen van activisten dat bekend staat als het Lolita-leger (of Lolita-familie), zijn ervan overtuigd dat als Lolita slaagt voor haar medische examen, ze zal gedijen in haar thuiswateren!

Wanneer ze eindelijk thuis is, zal ze op een gegeven moment waarschijnlijk de oproepen van haar familie horen tijdens hun normale reizen in de buurt. Wat er daarna gebeurt, zou voor hen allemaal ongekend zijn en kan niet met zekerheid worden voorspeld. Maar Garrett verwacht wederzijdse nieuwsgierigheid, communicatie en misschien... reünie. Lolita spreekt nog steeds de unieke taal van haar familie en haar vermoedelijke moeder, Ocean Sun, leeft nog steeds op 94-jarige leeftijd! Om deze twee te herenigen na 52 jaar uit elkaar te zijn geweest, zou een droom zijn die uitkomt voor Lolita, en voor degenen die al tientallen jaren voor haar vrijlating hebben gevochten.

In de komende dagen of weken zullen we contact opnemen met meer definitieve informatie en kunnen we mogelijk vragen om namens haar actie te ondernemen.

In Defense of Animals heeft achter de schermen samengewerkt met lokale activisten aan de release van Lolita en is enthousiast over deze veelbelovende ontwikkelingen.

Thanks for your positive response about our recent blog update about Lolita! To answer your question, our activist contacts say that Lolita most likely won't ever be returned to the wild, but if she passes her medical exam and various government permits, she may retire to a sea pen in her native waters. 

Lolita would have a natural, healthful environment, other sea creatures for company, and possible visual/sonic communication with her mother/pod. She would be able to finally exercise again in a normal way, diving deep and swimming far and gaining muscle and all the myriad benefits of an expansive space. She would be protected from the Miami sun and hurricanes, neither of which her species is equipped to deal with. If Lolita remembers how to, she will eventually catch her own fresh live fish.  

Lolita will be attended around the clock by a team of old and new caretakers, vets, and specialists...at first. Then, she will graduate slowly, after evaluation, from step to step.

Maar elke zondag, buiten de ingang van het Seaquarium, brengen demonstranten een andere boodschap. Thomas Copeland zegt dat hij hier al vier jaar in het weekend komt, om met bezoekers te praten op de parkeerplaats en bij de ingang. Via een hoorn zegt hij: "Deze plek is gruwelijk voor dieren. Het is een marteling. ... Eenenvijftig jaar gevangenschap voor die orka en je krijgt haar niet eens te zien, om haar toestand te zien."

Decennialang concentreerden de klachten over Lolita's zorg zich op één grote zorg: de grootte van haar tank. Het is 80 voet lang, 20 voet diep en slechts 35 voet breed.

"Vijfendertig voet", roept Naomi Rose uit. "Ze is 20 meter lang. En ze woont er al 50 jaar. Het is belachelijk." Rose is een zeezoogdierwetenschapper bij het Animal Welfare Institute, een belangenbehartigingsgroep in Washington, D.C. Jarenlang zei ze dat de inspanningen om de omstandigheden voor Lolita in Miami Seaquarium te verbeteren weinig tractie kregen, grotendeels omdat het bedrijf dat Lolita bezit, haar trainers en dierenartsen de juiste zorg verleende.
