Two women have been jailed for taking part in an online group of people who enjoy watching, buying and selling videos of monkeys being abused, tortured and killed

Two women have been jailed at Worcester Crown Court UK, for their part in a global monkey torture ring. Holly LeGresley, 37, of Kidderminster was sentenced to two years and Adriana Orme, 55, of Upton-upon Severn to one year and three months in prison. Both had previously pleaded guilty at separate hearings to publishing an obscene article and causing unnecessary suffering to animals.

Adriana Orme (left) and Holly Le Gresley (right) previously admitted being part of the network LeGresley and Orme discovered the online monkey hate community during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Their interest and involvement escalated and following intelligence from the National Crime Agency they were arrested by West Mercia Police in September and October 2022 as part of a joint operation with the National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU). The monkey hate community is an online group of people who enjoy watching - and in some cases paying for - videos of monkeys being abused, tortured and killed. LeGresley and Orme’s interest in the subject was initially through YouTube, but quickly escalated to groups on private messaging platforms such as Telegram and Discord.  Through these groups both women developed links with one of the main organisers of the global ring, a man in the USA called Michael Macartney, known online as ‘The Torture King’.  He was their direct line of contact to the people in Indonesia who carried out and filmed the torture. Earlier this month McCartney, 50, was jailed for three years and four months in the US state of Virginia for his part in the ring. LeGresley took on the role of ‘admin’ in a group on Telegram which meant she welcomed new members and helped them to access videos and photographs of monkeys being tortured.  She then took her involvement a step further by taking on responsibility for archiving all the content in the Telegram group as well as other groups, leading to a library of thousands of images and videos all showing monkey abuse, torture and killing. Both women watched the content themselves, and as evidenced by comments within the Telegram group expressed their delight at the images and videos they were viewing.  They also regularly shared content. LeGresley even set up a poll for members of the group to vote on the specific type of torture they would like to see inflicted on the monkeys.  She then directed people on how to make payment for the production of the video, with her and Orme both contributing financially. Sulala Animal Rescue in Gaza has with deep sorrow and grief announced that the missing veterinarian Dr. Muath Abu Rukba was killed in Jabalia Gaza

 

He was skilled, dedicated, compassionate and brave. He continued to save lives and suffered so much as his world was destroyed around him. Today our heartsbreak for Dr Mu'ath Abu Rakba, for his children, his wife, friends and colleagues at سلالة - Sulala Animal Rescue as we receive confirmation that Dr Mu'ath has been killed.

Dr Mu'ath disappeared last week after attempting to return to his home in Gaza. For the past two years he had been a vital member of the Sulala team after his own veterinary practice was destroyed by Israeli air strikes.

He was a devoted husband, father, colleague and friend — known for his gentle nature and kind smile. Despite unimaginable violence and danger, he never wavered in his commitment to animals — offering not only his exceptional skills to save as many lives as he could, but importantly, being able to give so many suffering animals warmth, love and peace in their final moments.

Dr Mu'ath, on behalf of all those you helped, supported and inspired — thank you for being a beacon of light in such dark times.

You gave peace to so many who suffered.

They couldn't find him and UK Vets for Palestine placed this urgent message that went viral: Dr Mu'ath Abu Rukba, a volunteer veterinary surgeon for Sulala Animal Rescue was reported missing as of October 10th 2025 while attempting to return to his home in Jabalia, north Gaza. Dr Mu'ath is known for his utmost care and dedication in treating the animals within the Gaza strip, working tirelessly with extremely limited resources. He and his family suffered displacement from their home due to the air strikes in Gaza, and have struggled with unstable access to food, clean water and permanent shelter. Despite this, he has continued to serve as a faithful volunteer to provide veterinary aid to his patients. The conditions of his disappearance are a cause of heightening concern for his loved ones, the team at Sulala Animal Rescue, the team at UK Vets for Palestine and by the wider community. Sadly, efforts to contact Dr Mu'ath so far have been unsuccessful. Israeli military operations in the area have made recent attempts to search for Dr Mu'ath extremely dangerous, as previous search parties have been met with active gunfire.  His expertise, hard work and compassion are irreplaceable assets to the Gazan community; it is time for us to return the favour. As veterinary professionals, and as humans, our moral responsibilities transcend far beyond the borders of the countries we reside in. We have a duty to advocate for our fellow veterinary colleague's safe return.  We urge veterinary authorities to broadcast the alarming situation regarding Dr Mu'ath's disappearance, and for international and local humanitarian organisations to prioritise an effective search strategy for his return. We call on the global community to unite and advocate for Dr Mu'ath. The truth behind camel rides in Morocco: exploited, beaten then killed and sold for meat ( video not suitable for children )

The shocking footage shows camels tethered with ropes only a few meters long, exposed to a heavy sandstorm, and forced to transport tourists all day in the scorching heat. One operator was filmed repeatedly hitting a tethered camel with a long stick as the animal desperately tried to avoid the blows. A ride operator told investigators that camels, which can live up to 40 years, are typically used for about five years. After that, they are killed or sold for their meat.

Camels are intelligent, social creatures with needs, desires, and interests. When free to roam in their natural habitat, they live in herds and communicate with each other through sounds and body movements. As a sign of friendship, camels sometimes blow on each other's faces. But these animals endure a lifetime of misery and suffering in the tourist industry.

Global pattern of cruelty

Previous PETA Asia investigations into camel and horse riding in Egypt revealed similar abuses: animals were beaten bloody, forced to carry people in the scorching heat without shade or water, and, if old, sick, or injured, were dumped as waste or sent to slaughter. Following information from PETA entities, Airbnb, Flash Pack, Scott Dunn, Travel Republic, and many other companies have pledged to stop promoting animal rides at the Giza Pyramids.

How you can help

Tourists who pay for camel rides perpetuate this heartless, inhumane industry. Whether in Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Gran Canaria, Egypt, or anywhere else, camel rides and excursions are a form of camel exploitation . If you're planning a vacation, leave animals out of your itinerary.
