From CAS International and  AnimaNaturalis, we have once again released a new report, this time about the bullfights in Pamplona during the San Fermín festivities of 2026. What many people do not know is that the bulls that run through the streets of Pamplona in the morning die in the arena during a bullfight later that very day. Our report aims to raise awareness of this.

Every year, thousands of tourists from home and abroad – including many Dutch, British, American, and Australian visitors – take part in the bull runs in Pamplona. We are often unaware that the bulls running through the streets in the morning are killed that same day during a bullfight. The famous bull runs of Pamplona are actually nothing more than a remnant of a medieval tradition of 'running the bulls'. toward the arena for a bullfight.

Opinion of the Spanish population

The bull runs of Pamplona seem popular because they receive a lot of media attention. But in reality, most Spaniards are against bullfighting. A 2025 survey by Sigma Dos  shows that 78 percent of Spaniards do not consider themselves supporters of bullfighting.

A study by the  Fundación BBVA shows that 77% of the Spanish population finds it unacceptable that animals are used for bullfighting. Other studies confirm this picture. And figures from the Ministry of Culture (2024-2025) show that only 8% of Spaniards attend events involving bulls, such as the Pamplona bull runs or bullfights.

In 2024, Ipsos I&O Publiek conducted a survey among 7,500 people about bullfighting, commissioned by CAS International. This revealed that the majority of people in Spain, France, and Portugal are opposed to bullfighting. They believe that this tradition inflicts unnecessary suffering on the bulls.

CAS International calls on tourists to stay away from the bull runs and thus not contribute to the perpetuation of this violent tradition.

Petition against EU subsidies

Bullfighting in Europe still takes place in Spain, France, and Portugal. Every year, thousands of bulls die in the arena, and tens of thousands of other bulls and cows are used in cruel traditional festivals, such as bull runs.

What many people don’t know is that this is partly made possible by the European Union (EU). And every EU citizen contributes to this.

How does that work?

Every year, the EU provides agricultural subsidies to farmers. This is done through a scheme called the Common Agricultural Policy. A portion of this money, an estimated 200 million euros per year, goes to breeders of bulls used for bullfighting.

Many people in Spain, France, Portugal, and the rest of the EU disagree with this. They believe their tax money should not be used for these practices.

But we can do something about it!

In the coming years, the European Commission, EU Member States, and the European Parliament will decide on a new Common Agricultural Policy for after 2027. This is the perfect time to show that we want an end to these subsidies for bull breeders.

Public Opinion

In 2024, we commissioned a public survey on opinions regarding bullfighting in Spain, France, and Portugal. A majority of the population in these countries is against bullfighting and believes that no public funds should be spent on facilitating it. Read all the survey results here.

That’s why we at CAS International, with the support of the animal rights organizations AnimaNaturalis (Spain) and ANIMAL (Portugal), have started a petition to end European agricultural subsidies for bull breeders. In the coming years, the new agricultural policy after 2027 will be determined, making this the perfect moment for European citizens to show that we do not want EU money supporting these cruel practices.

Majority of people in European bullfighting countries against the harmful tradition

The majority of people in Spain, France and Portugal is against bullfighting and think the harmful tradition causes too much suffering to bulls, a survey shows. The survey among 7500 people carried out by Ipsos I&O Public on behalf of the Dutch animal protection Ngo CAS International shows furthermore that a great majority of the inhabitants of the three European countries where bullfighting still takes place think that public money should not be spent to support bullfighting and that the European Union should protect the welfare of animals within cultural traditions.

Het ministerie van Cultuur schrapt subsidies aan circussen met wilde dieren in Spanje

Vanaf nu worden circussen die wilde dieren gebruiken op tournees door Spanje niet langer gesubsidieerd, zoals al in 2019 aangekondigd door het INAEM (Nationaal Instituut voor Podiumkunsten en Muziek van Spanje), een agentschap onder het ministerie van Cultuur en Sport.

Het ministerie van Cultuur gaf circussen in 2019 een periode van drie jaar om te stoppen met het gebruik van wilde dieren in hun shows. Anders kondigde hij aan dat ze geen toegang zouden hebben tot de subsidies. Ze kondigden ook aan dat de oproep tot hulp vooral de presentatie van een verlaten plan bij het gebruik van dit soort dieren zou waarderen. Dit werd door het ministerie openbaar gemaakt via het National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), het orgaan dat verantwoordelijk is voor deze subsidies.

Veel olifantenhaken worden gebruikt om dit dier zo te laten staan op een bal  Schandalig !

InfoCircos beschouwt deze wijziging in subsidies als een overwinning, het resultaat van een overeenkomst met de INAEM. In februari 2016 bezorgde InfoCircos samen met actrices Natalie Seseña en Lluvia Rojo aan dit orgaan meer dan honderdduizend handtekeningen die in iets meer dan een maand waren verzameld tegen overheidssubsidies voor circussen met wilde dieren.

InfoCircos schat dat de subsidies kunnen variëren van 10.000 tot 40.000 euro per jaar per circus, hoewel er de laatste jaren een geleidelijke daling was van de steun aan circussen met dieren, in lijn met het proces van omschakeling dat de circussen zelf ondernamen naar shows zonder dieren.

Och kleintje toch ! Verschrikkelijk

Na drie jaar dialoog met de instelling feliciteert InfoCircos het INAEM met de genomen stap, die vanaf het eerste moment een goede ontvankelijkheid had. Het bereikte akkoord betekende de opening van een aanpassingsperiode voor circusgezelschappen die nog steeds wilde dieren gebruikten in hun shows. In 2022 is eindelijk de oproep voor Circushulp aangepast. Vanaf dit moment komen de aanvragende circusgezelschappen niet meer in aanmerking voor subsidies als ze wilde dieren gebruiken in hun shows in Spanje.

«Te allen tijde, zowel van INAEM als van InfoCircos, werd geprobeerd een manier te vinden om deze paar circussen in staat te stellen de laatste stap te zetten naar hun conversie naar shows zonder dieren op een geleidelijke en zo minder traumatische manier mogelijk,"

 Marta Merchán, coördinator van InfoCircos, legt het uit. Slechts 2 of 3 Spaanse circussen blijven wilde dieren gebruiken in hun shows, de rest ziet er al van af. Zelfs degenen die ze nog steeds onderhouden, hebben een alternatief actieprogramma zonder dieren om zich te presenteren in die gemeenten en regio's waar de aanwezigheid van wilde dieren niet langer is toegestaan. 

"De sociale en economische impact van maatregelen om een einde te maken aan het gebruik van wilde dieren in circussen in Spanje is minimaal. Deze paar bedrijven hebben echter aanpassingstermijnen en -faciliteiten gekregen om de overgang voor hen gemakkelijker te maken. Maar het is duidelijk dat ze moeten mentaliseren en hun deel moeten doen, zoals honderden Spaanse, Europese en wereldcircussen al hebben gedaan, die zijn gestopt met het gebruik van dieren om zich aan te passen aan de tijd en wat de samenleving eist," vervolgt Merchán.

InfoCircos heeft altijd samenwerking aangeboden bij de verplaatsing van dieren wanneer deze paar bedrijven de stap naar reconversie zetten. In feite, in het opvangcentrum voor wilde dieren van AAP Primadomus (lid van InfoCircos) gevestigd in Villena (Alicante) 80% van de grote katten die worden verwelkomd, komen uit circussen of fokkers die verbonden zijn met circussen.

Aan de andere kant hebben 25 lidstaten van de Europese Unie nationale wetgeving die het gebruik van dieren in circussen beperkt en in de overige 3 zijn er regionale en gemeentelijke verboden. Dit is het geval in Spanje, waar vandaag 78% van de Spaanse bevolking leeft in een gebied dat vrij is van circussen met dieren. In slechts 7 jaar is de vooruitgang spectaculair geweest en is het verbod bereikt in 11 autonome gemeenschappen en 500 gemeenten, van alle politieke kleuren. Het ministerie van Cultuur sluit zich nu aan bij deze algemene trend en we vertrouwen erop dat de autonome regio's waar deze shows nog steeds zijn toegestaan, zonder verder uitstel een einde zullen maken aan deze anachronistische praktijk.

De aanwezigheid van wilde dieren in circussen vormt een enorm lijden voor deze dieren en vormt een ernstig gezondheids- en veiligheidsrisico. Incidenten met wilde dieren die in circussen worden gebruikt, komen vaak voor. De Europese Veterinaire Federatie (FVE) en de Algemene Raad van Veterinaire Colleges van Spanje bevestigen de onmogelijkheid om de bescherming van dieren, veiligheid en gezondheid te garanderen in reizende circussen met wilde dieren, en bevelen om deze redenen aan de bevoegde autoriteiten het verbod op deze shows aan.

Wild Animals Don’t Belong in Circuses

Canada begint vandaag met het doodknuppelen van 400.000 zeehondenpups: import in 35 landen verboden toch geeft de overheid miljoenen dollars subsidies aan het bloedvergieten

Vanmorgen om 06.00 lokale tijd is de commerciële zeehondenjacht in Canada gestart. Terwijl je dit leest, worden tot 400.000 weerloze pups op brute wijze doodgeknuppeld voor hun vacht. Wij roepen premier Trudeau op nu voorgoed de knuppels neer te leggen en vragen Canada de ogen te openen voor een dier- en milieuvriendelijke heropbouw van de economie na de coronapandemie. Teken nu onze petitie!

Sinds het importverbod op zeehondenbont in 35 landen is de vraag naar het bont ingestort. Ook wordt jaarlijks slechts 8% van het jachtquotum gehaald. De zeehondenjacht is dus allang niet rendabel meer. Toch blijft de overheid miljoenen dollars aan subsidies verstrekken aan een handjevol jagers, waarmee het bloedvergieten in stand wordt gehouden. Wij vragen de overheid deze subsidies niet in jagers te investeren maar in het verwijderen van plastic en oud vissersmateriaal uit de zeeën en oceanen. Daarnaast kan de overheid met dit geld de groeiende populariteit van zeehondentoerisme ondersteunen. 

Klimaatverandering
Zeehondentoerisme als alternatieve inkomstenbron levert financieel veel meer op dan enkele weken zeehonden doodknuppelen, maar door opwarming van de aarde is het ijs in Canada in rap tempo aan het verslechteren. Moederdieren aborteren hun zwangerschap als het ijs te zwak is en pups die in het water terecht komen, verdrinken. Bij verdere verslechtering van het ijs zullen de dieren naar gebieden trekken waar toeristen niet bij kunnen. De overheid subsidieert ijsbrekers, zodat jagers bij de zeehonden kunnen komen. Dit komt het fragiele ijs niet ten goede. Om te kunnen blijven profiteren van zeehondentoerisme is het noodzakelijk dat Canada juist investeert in het beschermen van het leefgebied van de zeehonden.  

In 34 jaar tijd zijn er ruim 4,6 miljoen dieren gedood voor hun vacht. De jonge dieren hebben geen schijn van kans tegen de knuppels van de jagers. Bijna de helft van deze dieren is zelfs nog bij bewustzijn wanneer zij worden gevild, omdat er zo ‘efficiënt mogelijk’ moet worden gewerkt. Sandra Schoenmakers, directeur Bont voor Dieren: “De jacht staat symbool voor één van de meest vreselijke vormen van dierenleed. Jagen op deze prachtige dieren is onnodig en barbaars. We moeten nu de overheid overtuigen een diervriendelijke koers te varen. De smoes dat zeehonden negatieve impact hebben op de visstand is ook wetenschappelijk achterhaald. Er is werkelijk geen enkele reden om door te gaan met deze jacht”.  

Help de zeehonden
We moeten nu het tij keren en de Canadese overheid overtuigen te investeren in het tegengaan van dierenleed, vervuiling van onze wateren en opwarming van de aarde. Canada mag niet langer de ogen sluiten voor de waarheid. Strijd mee voor een wereld zonder afschuwelijke zeehondenjacht. Teken nu onze petitie!

Op 22 oktober stemt het Europees Parlement over de nieuwe begroting van 2015, met daarin onder andere de Europese landbouwsubsidies. GroenLinks-Europarlementariër Bas Eickhout vindt het onacceptabel dat boeren die stieren fokken om ze te gebruiken bij stierenvechten, nog steeds aanspraak kunnen maken op Europese subsidies. Hij dient een voorstel in om te voorkomen dat Europese subsidies worden gebruikt om deze boeren financieel te ondersteunen.

Eickhouts voorstel om EU-subsidies voor stierenvechten te stoppen kreeg eerder al een meerderheid in de milieucommissie van het Europarlement, maar werd niet aangenomen in de begrotingscommissie. Daarom brengt Eickhout zijn amendement nu opnieuw in en moet het hele Europarlement er hoofdelijk over stemmen. Dan weten we dus precies wie ons wel en niet steunt.
Het Europees Verdrag voor de bescherming van dieren is duidelijk:

Dieren mogen niet lijden aan pijn, verwondingen, angst of stress.

Het is duidelijk dat boeren die stieren fokken om ze deel te laten nemen aan stierengevechten niet voldoen aan deze voorwaarden. Daarom mogen ze niet in aanmerking komen voor EU-subsidie. Het is de taak van de Europese Commissie om toe te zien op de naleving van de Europese verdragen en om actie te ondernemen als dat niet het geval is.
In het Europees Parlement werken de Europarlementariërs van Groen (België) en GroenLinks (Nederland) nauw samen. Bart Staes, de Europarlementariër van Groen, staat naast Bas Eickhout in de strijd tegen EU-subsidies voor stierenvechten en is een van de eerste ondertekenaars van het amendement.
