Colombia’s Plenary Chamber of the Constitutional Court has unanimously endorsed Law 2385 of 2024, which prohibits bullfighting in Colombia, declaring the law constitutional. Furthermore, the Court extended the ban to other public spectacles involving abuse, such as cockfights, corralejas (anyone in the audience runs after bulls and attacks them with various objects), and coleo (a practice derived from the vaquerÃa where bulls are knocked down from a horse). The Court has allowed a three-year period for implementation of the new law.

The Court’s decision is consistent with Ruling 283 of 2014, upholding the Law banning the use of wild animals in circuses promoted by ADI, which includes the provision that even if a spectacle is deemed ‘cultural’, if it harms animals, it is banned.
ADI applauds the Constitutional Court's decision and thank everyone who has joined this extensive and intense campaign. It has taken years of lobbying in Congress, evidence given in hearings, street activism, organizing public events, and presenting interventions to defend the law against the various constitutional challenges which were filed. The animals won!
