Animal Equality's UK reveal horrific animal abuse and neglect in pig farms Southwest England in Spain, Italy, Germany and US ( graphic video)

Animal Equality’s UK Executive Director–alongside award-winning photographer Aitor Garmendia–has uncovered distressing animal suffering within a UK pig facility known as Cross Farm. Despite its Red Tractor certification–which claims to ensure high standards of animal welfare–the farm’s practices appear to tell a different story.

The Southwest English farm confines about 12,000 pigs at any given time. Female pigs are kept in small cages known as “farrowing crates.” These cages confine pregnant pigs shortly before giving birth and for several weeks after they have given birth, typically for 4-5 weeks each time. The space of the crates is so small that the mother pigs are prevented from turning around. These pigs endure constant confinement and stress, repeatedly giving birth to piglets destined for the UK pig meat market. Eventually, mother pigs are also slaughtered.

Cross Farm supplies Tesco, one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains. The investigative findings, recently highlighted in The Daily Mail and The Times, raise questions about the true value of “high-welfare” labels. They also provide further evidence for the need to shift towards a plant-based food system.

Dead piglets, cages, and decaying corpses

Animal Equality UK’s Executive Director–Abigail Penny–and a team of investigators visited the farm six times across 2023 and 2024. They captured over 100 hours of footage.

They found:

Piglets “thumped” against concrete walls with enough force to kill them
Piglets having their tails cut off and teeth clipped without anesthesia
A piglet thrown by workers across the shed

A bin full of dead piglets and rotting corpses on the barn floor

Cross Farm won the National Pig Award in 2016 and 2017. This year, Adrian Russell–a Director at Cross Farm–ran for an elected seat on the National Pig Association Pig Industry Group. Although he didn’t win, Adrian has worked in the pig industry for over 30 years.

Cross Farm has been exposed for its disturbing practices before. In 2017, after a tip-off, Animal Equality filmed pigs in leaking, rundown buildings, covered in liquid manure, and lying in their own waste. Investigators also recorded pigs with their tails cut off, others suffering from large hernias, as well as pregnant pigs in concrete pens without anything to keep them occupied.

In March, Glass Wall Films released footage from another Cross Farm investigation. Captured in late 2023, the footage shows dead piglets and decomposing bodies, pigs engaging in cannibalism due to the stressful and unnatural conditions, caged pigs with untreated wounds, and cramped, filthy conditions.

Formal complaint to authorities

Animal Equality has instructed Advocates for Animals, a law firm, to file a formal complaint with the UK’s Trading Standards and the Animal, Plant, and Health Agency. Animal Equality believes there are several potential legal breaches, including the treatment and killing of piglets, untreated injuries to pigs, piglet carcasses, lack of stimulation for caged pigs, and unsanitary conditions found throughout the farm.

Typical of the industry, experts claim

Animal Equality’s investigations repeatedly show that animals suffer for meat, and experts agree.

Dr. Alice Brough, a veterinarian who worked with UK pig producers from 2015 to 2019, says, “Most of what we see here is typical of the industry as a whole… very little of UK pig farming is suitable for the eyes of the public.”

Eva Read, a PhD candidate at the London School of Economics, agrees. She has researched commercial pig farming in the UK and studied pig vocal communication in France, and is familiar with typical British farming practices.

Legal enforcement lacking in the UK

In 2022, Animal Equality and The Animal Law Foundation released a groundbreaking report on “The Enforcement Problem.” Our teams found that fewer than 3% of the UK’s 290,000 farms are inspected annually, and only 0.33% of complaints lead to prosecution.

The report also reveals that nearly three-quarters of pigs have their tails cut off without pain relief to prevent tail-biting, a painful practice caused by stress, inadequate space, and lack of stimulation.

Global response to pig farming cruelty

This investigation highlights pig farming issues that resonate globally. Animal Equality’s investigators have found piglets’ body parts strewn about Italian farms, cannibalism amongst pigs in Spain, and severe, deliberate abuse on one of Germany’s largest pig farms.

In the UK, previous investigations have found piglets hammered to death in “high-welfare” facilities.

Similar problems are rampant in the United States, where factory farms subject pigs to extreme confinement, painful procedures without anesthesia, and unsanitary conditions. Critics note that inspections are infrequent and legal enforcement is lacking, allowing these illegal practices to continue.

Animal Equality exposed shocking violations of California’s animal cruelty laws at a Foster Farms chicken hatchery in Waterford, California. The facility sells newborn chicks to factory farms, which West Coast grocery stores, including Walmart, Costco, Kroger, Target, and Chick-fil-A,

Baby birds crushed, drowned, and mutilated

At the hatchery, live chicks were mutilated by fast-moving machinery and then left for hours until they were dumped into a chute where they would be ground up alive.

Hours-old chicks were discovered with their bodies ripped open, exposing internal organs, and found caught or crushed by the mechanized processing equipment. Chicks that were trapped in dirty trays drowned in scalding water in the company’s washing machine.

Animal Equality’s investigator documented chicks scalded to death after being trapped in trays going through the washing machine, which uses hot, high-pressure water.

Seeking Justice

In a letter dated December 2, 2021, Animal Equality presented its findings to the offices of District Attorney Brigit Fladager and Sheriff Jeff Dirkse. The letter, which was accompanied by extensive undercover video footage, detailed how the company routinely subjects the baby chicks to needless suffering, injury, and death. It also demonstrates that chicks are left to languish without proper care and attention after injury.

Animal Equality asserts that the acts and practices documented at the Foster Farms hatchery constitute “cruelty to animals” and “failure to care for animals” under California Penal Code sections 597(b) and 597.1(a)(1), respectively. These laws prohibit a broad range of cruel conduct, but most relevant is the prohibition on torture, torment, mutilation, cruel killing, and any other act or omission that “subjects any animal to needless suffering.”

Foster Farms’ operation of its hatchery reflects a complete disregard for the lives of the individual chicks. Preventable death, injury, and suffering were the result and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible.

Animal Equality breaking investigation: Ahold Delhaize cruelty exposed reveals extreem animal cruelty ( video )

Animal Equality’s latest exposé of a US pig farm linked to major supermarket chains reveals extreme animal cruelty. Footage shows pigs trapped in tiny cages, dead piglets on filthy floors, and pigs engaging in repetitive, stress-induced behaviours.

Footage showed dead piglets, pigs with wounds, and stress behaviours like chewing the air. Some pigs were too big for the crates and got stuck under the doors.
One pig nudged her dead companion; another was shot in full view of other pigs.
In the US, about 3.5 million pigs are kept in gestation crates condemned by experts as extremely cruel.
Ahold Delhaize’s brands promised to ban crates nearly 10 years ago. It has delayed action until 2028.

A new exposé by Animal Equality has revealed animal cruelty at a Kansas pig breeding facility linked to Ahold Delhaize – the parent company of US supermarket stores including Stop & Shop, Giant, and Food Lion.

The 2024-2025 footage shows pregnant pigs locked inside gestation crates – metal cages so small they couldn’t turn around or take more than a single step. For nearly four months at a time, the animals were forced to struggle against the bars, desperate for even a hint of movement.

The video reveals a pattern of suffering: piglets dead on the floors, mothers with open wounds, and signs of severe psychological stress. Pigs were seen chewing the air, trying to escape, or lying still and unresponsive.

Confinement triggers abnormal behaviour in pigs

Many pigs were covered in bloody sores where the metal bars dug into their skin, left vulnerable to infection on faeces-covered floors. Some showed signs of prolapsed organs after repeated pregnancies.

Several pigs were too large for the crates and struggled to move. Some wedged their faces beneath the cage doors in search of space. One pig became stuck and screamed until a worker intervened.

Our investigator also observed repetitive behaviours, many of which are stress-induced. Some pigs bit the bars or chewed the air. Others pushed their bodies into the backs of their crates repeatedly.

Some screamed. Others lay still, pressed against the metal – silent and unresponsive. A few tried to climb the bars, pawing at the air.

Piglets and mothers die behind bars

Investigators documented premature piglets born inside gestation crates, many of whom died within an hour. Their mothers, trapped in cages too small to turn around, could not see or reach their dead piglets.

Outside the facility, the decaying bodies of discarded piglets were filmed on the ground and in wheelbarrows. These piglets had been removed from the farm floors as part of the workers’ regular duties.

Adult pigs also died prematurely on this farm. In one scene, a pig nudged the body of her dead companion, appearing to search for a response.

In another, a wounded pig was shot with a captive bolt gun and left to die in a holding pen while others looked on, unable to turn away.

Gestation crates face global controversy

Across the United States, an estimated 3.5 million mother pigs are confined in gestation crates.

Experts have condemned them as “one of the cruelest forms of confinement devised by humankind”. Some have compared this extreme confinement to spending months in an airplane seat.

When it’s time to give birth, pigs are moved to slightly different enclosures known as farrowing crates. After nursing their piglets, they’re returned to gestation crates to start the cycle again.

The only time these animals walk is between cages – and eventually, to slaughter.

Pigs are bred repeatedly until their bodies can no longer meet industry demands. Then they’re killed and replaced with younger animals.

Despite growing public criticism and bans in several US states and countries, including the UK, gestation crates remain common across the pig farming industry. In some barns, more than a thousand pigs are lined up in crates just slightly wider than their bodies.

Who’s holding Ahold Delhaize accountable?

Ahold Delhaize continues to allow gestation crates in its US supply chain, prompting global backlash.

Nearly ten years ago, some of the company’s brands promised to stop using gestation crates. Ahold Delhaize reaffirmed that promise in 2020. It has made little progress since then and has shared no clear updates.

The company has now delayed its deadline to 2028. Even then, the change will apply only to some products.

While Ahold Delhaize has made improvements in Europe – mainly due to stronger laws – its US operations still rely on extreme confinement. Other grocery companies have already stopped using gestation crates. Some of Ahold Delhaize’s own brands in Europe have, too.

In response, Animal Equality launched a campaign for accountability. This includes secondary campaigns against Pandora Jewellery and Symrise – two companies that share board member, Jan Zijderveld, with Ahold Delhaize.

Zijderveld sits on the Supervisory Board that oversees the company’s animal welfare policies.

Demonstrations have taken place in the US, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark and the UK. Meanwhile, advocates have been emailing company executives and flooding social media.

The UK pig meat industry

While the UK has banned gestation crates, the use of farrowing crates is still widespread; 60% of mother pigs spend up to a quarter of their lives in these cruel conditions.

At Cross Farm in Devon, a Red Tractor – assured facility, Animal Equality documented mothers staring blankly through metal bars, surrounded by cold concrete, their only ‘enrichment’ a single wooden stick. Some were trapped so tightly that they accidentally crushed their own babies to death.

Even in so-called ‘cage-free’ systems, their welfare is far from guaranteed; when it comes time to kill them, most pigs in the UK face one of the cruellest stunning methods – high intensity CO₂ gas, which causes them to essentially feel as though they are burning from the inside out.

Shifting demand away from cages

This system exists to meet demand for pig meat – but that demand is shifting.

Across the UK, plant-based options like bacon, sausage, and whole-food protein alternatives are becoming easier to find and prepare. Many fit seamlessly into everyday meals.

Undercoveronderzoek van Animal Equality onthult opzettelijke wrede dierenmishandeling op varkensboerderijen in Duitsland: de beelden zijn live uitgezonden en hebben miljoenen kijkers bereikt

Het meest uitgebreide onderzoek van Animal Equality tot nu toe onthult ongebreidelde en opzettelijke dierenmishandeling op een van de grootste varkensboerderijen van Duitsland.
Veel van de bevindingen van Animal Equality zijn in strijd met het recht van de Europese Unie.
Deze onthullingen, uitgezonden op de grootste televisienieuwszender van Duitsland, hebben miljoenen kijkers bereikt.
Animal Equality heeft een klacht ingediend bij de bevoegde autoriteiten.

Een undercoveronderzoeker van Animal Equality bracht vier maanden door in een van de grootste varkenshouderijen van Duitsland. In de faciliteit, waar ongeveer 25.000 varkens worden gehouden, documenteerde de onderzoeker routinematig geweld en verwaarlozing. Met 120 dagen is dit het langste undercoveronderzoek van Animal Equality.

De beelden werden live uitgezonden op de grootste nationale televisiezender van Duitsland - Das Erste - tijdens een programma genaamd Kontraste, evenals vele andere grote nieuwszenders.

Verontrustende bevindingen

Het onderzoek brengt verschillende gevallen van dierenmishandeling aan het licht, waarvan sommige in strijd zijn met het recht van de Europese Unie:

Een arbeider draait en breekt de nek van biggen met zijn blote handen, een praktijk die in Duitsland verboden is.
Een andere arbeider gooit een biggetje eerst op de betonnen vloer, waardoor ze omkomen.
Een gewond varken wordt achtervolgd en tevergeefs verdoofd met een grendelpistool. De bout komt vast te zitten in de schedel van het dier. De arbeider slaat het varken vervolgens met een houten balk op de grond en snijdt zijn keel door.
Een arbeider staat met zijn laars op de nek van een biggetje en snijdt zijn keel door zonder voorafgaande effectieve verdoving.
Een biggetje, dat aan de zogenaamde 'dodingstafel' wordt gesneden, wordt later nog ademend aangetroffen onder een stapel dode lichamen.
Een werknemer duwt een big op de grond als straf voor het niet bewegen, gaat vervolgens op de big zitten en slaat hem meerdere keren in het gezicht.
Arbeiders schilderen het lichaam van een kronkelend biggetje voor amusement.

Alarmerend is dat oudere biggen worden gecastreerd door een dierenarts die ze aan een ladder hangt en een incisie in de buik maakt. Sommige varkens worden niet goed gedesinfecteerd voordat de incisie wordt gemaakt. Eén biggetje vertoonde tekenen van pijn, ondanks pogingen om ze te verdoven.

Dit is duidelijk brute mishandeling en marteling van de dieren. Dit gedrag kan op geen enkele manier worden verklaard door wangedrag als gevolg van onwetendheid of buitensporige eisen, maar is een opzettelijke, herhaalde en brute wreedheid tegen dieren.

Andere routinematige bevindingen

Het onderzoek brengt ook de opsluiting van moedervarkens in 'kraamhokken' aan het licht - een controversiële praktijk die ook wettelijk is toegestaan in Britse varkenshouderijen. Kort voor de bevalling worden moedervarkens in deze kleine kooien gehuisvest; Vervolgens worden ze vijf weken in de kooi gehouden, totdat hun biggen worden gespeend. Door de kleine ruimte kunnen ze zich niet omdraaien. Veel moedervarkens lijden aan ernstige, onbehandelde verwondingen door tegen de tralies te wrijven - zoals ook het geval was in het laatste varkensexposé van Animal Equality in het VK.

Aanvullend bewijs toont aan dat de staarten van biggen worden geamputeerd toen ze slechts een paar dagen oud waren, een mogelijke schending van de regelgeving van de Europese Unie. Evenzo worden de meeste biggen op Britse boerderijen ook op deze manier verminkt, meestal zonder pijnverlichting, ondanks dat het illegaal is om routinematig de staarten van biggen af te snijden.

Dieren op deze Duitse boerderij blijken routinematig te worden geschopt, geslagen, door stallen te worden achtervolgd of door de faciliteit te worden gegooid door werknemers.

Juridische stappen en wereldwijde reactie

Animal Equality heeft uitgebreid bewijsmateriaal ingediend bij de autoriteiten. Er zijn strafrechtelijke aanklachten ingediend tegen het varkenshouderijbedrijf en individuele werknemers.

Actie ondernemen voor varkens

Animal Equality loopt voorop bij het blootleggen van wreedheid tegen varkens wereldwijd. Hoewel de verontrustende beelden uit Duitsland – die tienduizenden videoweergaven opleveren – ernstige misstanden aan het licht brengen, blijkt uit ons onderzoek dat dergelijke scènes niet op zichzelf staan. Soortgelijke gevallen van wreedheid en verwaarlozing worden gezien op fabrieksboerderijen in Spanje, Italië, Mexico en zelfs op geaccrediteerde boerderijen in het VK.

In het Verenigd Koninkrijk hebben we in de loop der jaren verschillende Red Tractor-geaccrediteerde varkenshouderijen onderzocht, waaronder meest recentelijk Cross Farm in Holsworthy, Devon, die naar schatting 12.000 varkens opsluit en varkensvlees levert aan Tesco.

Tijdens zes bezoeken aan deze boerderij tussen 2023-2024 hebben we meer dan 100 uur aan bewijsmateriaal verzameld en een reeks misstanden gedocumenteerd, zowel legaal als illegaal. We ontdekten dat biggetjes werden 'geslagen' en gedood tegen betonnen muren, dat hun staarten zonder verdoving werden afgesneden en levend werden verpletterd terwijl hun moeders probeerden zich om te draaien in kooien.

Onze wereldwijde onderzoeken brengen een aantal alarmerende en wijdverbreide problemen aan het licht op zowel gecertificeerde als niet-gecertificeerde varkenshouderijen. De varkensvleesindustrie is gebouwd op een fundament van lijden, gewoon voor winst. Moedervarkens worden keer op keer wreed gekooid en onder dwang geïmpregneerd, voordat ze op jonge leeftijd worden geslacht. Hun jongen worden vaak pijnlijk verminkt – hun tanden en staarten worden afgeknipt – en 'vetgemest' voordat ze uiteindelijk naar de slacht worden gestuurd. De meerderheid van de varkens in het Verenigd Koninkrijk zit opgesloten in overvolle bio-industriebedrijven, met weinig om hun intelligente geest bezig te houden.

Onze teams over de hele wereld zijn toegewijd om een einde te maken aan deze wreedheid. In Duitsland ondernemen we juridische stappen tegen misbruikende boerderijen en dringen we er bij het land op aan om over te schakelen op plantaardige alternatieven. In de VS hebben we een petitie gelanceerd om een einde te maken aan de bio-industrie en richten we ons op bedrijven zoals Denny's, die nog steeds wrede kooien gebruiken om moedervarkens op te sluiten tijdens de zwangerschap, ondanks dat ze zich meer dan tien jaar geleden hebben gecommitteerd om deze praktijk binnen hun toeleveringsketen te beëindigen.

In het Verenigd Koninkrijk gebruiken we ons beeldmateriaal om de regering op te roepen dierenmishandelaars ter verantwoording te roepen. We benadrukken dat door de industrie gefinancierde certificeringsregelingen zichzelf niet effectief kunnen reguleren en pleiten voor een strenger regelgevend kader van de overheid, inclusief onaangekondigde inspecties en een vergunningensysteem, terwijl we er ook op aandringen dat overheidssubsidies worden aangeboden aan boeren om in plaats daarvan over te stappen op akkerbouw.

Undercover investigations: bij extreme mishandelingen van dieren in varkenshouderijen in Spanje en UK zijn van duizenden bedrijven maar 3% geïnspecteerd

De varkenshouderij in Devon UK is bekritiseerd door dierenrechtenactivisten die foto's en videobeelden verzamelden van biggen die tegen muren werden gegooid, een bak vol rottende biggen lijken en varkens die vast waren komen te zitten in kooien.

Maar de National Pig Association zegt dat het Cross Farm in de buurt van Holsworthy "aan alle eisen voldoet". Eerder dit jaar was Adrian Russell, een directeur van de boerderij, in de running voor een gekozen producentenzetel voor de National Pig Association Pig Industry Group. Hij was niet succesvol in zijn bod op een zetel, maar zei dat hij "meer dan 30 jaar in de varkensindustrie had gewerkt".

Cross Farm: A repeat offender

Eind 2023 heeft ook een crew van Glass Wall Films een bezoek gebracht en beelden gemaakt van dode biggen, varkens die zich bezighouden met kannibalisme, varkens met onbehandelde wonden en krappe, "smerige" omstandigheden.

Abigail Penny, uitvoerend directeur van Animal Equality UK, zei: "Ik heb Cross Farm verschillende keren persoonlijk bezocht en was uit de eerste hand getuige van het lijden van deze dieren. Ik keek gekooide moedervarkens in de ogen en hun diepe verdriet zal me voor altijd bijblijven.

"Cross Farm is een recidivist, die in de loop der jaren in het epicentrum van een aantal onderzoeken heeft gestaan. Desondanks hebben we deze boerderij in de loop van acht maanden gemonitord en opnieuw alom tegenwoordig en aanhoudende problemen ontdekt. De autoriteiten moeten absoluut ingrijpen en onze klachten serieus nemen.

"Varkens op Cross Farm worstelen en lijden in de meest erbarmelijke omstandigheden. Maar al te vaak wordt hun geschreeuw achter gesloten deuren gehouden, maar onze beelden tonen de ellendige realiteit waarmee zoveel moedervarkens vandaag de dag op Britse boerderijen worden geconfronteerd." Ze riep consumenten op om "te stoppen met betalen voor deze pijn en in plaats daarvan plantaardig te kopen".

Animal Equality heeft de bewering van de National Pig Association verworpen dat de boerderij aan de regels voldoet en heeft advocatenkantoor Advocates for Animals ingeschakeld om een formele klacht in te dienen bij Trading Standards. Zij stellen dat de behandeling van varkens en biggen kan neerkomen op verschillende wet overtreding

Advocaat bij Advocates for Animals, Taylor Mcleod, zei: "De mogelijke inbreuken op dierenwelzijnswetten die te zien zijn in de beelden die door Animal Equality zijn vastgelegd, zijn zeer zorgwekkend.

"Dierenwelzijnswetgeving bestaat om dieren te beschermen tegen de behandeling die te zien is in de videobeelden, en de overheidsinstanties hebben de plicht om ervoor te zorgen dat deze wetten worden nageleefd. We hopen dat er een grondig onderzoek zal worden uitgevoerd en dat de nodige veranderingen zullen worden aangebracht om ervoor te zorgen dat de welzijnsnormen worden gehandhaafd en gehandhaafd".

Maar helaas is dit geen geïsoleerd incident. Het meeste van wat we hier zien is typerend voor de industrie als geheel... heel weinig van de Britse varkenshouderij is geschikt voor de ogen van het publiek".

Eva Read, promovendus aan de London School of Economics and Political Science, die onderzoek heeft gedaan naar de commerciële standaard varkenshouderij in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en onderzoek heeft gedaan naar vocale communicatie van emoties op een varkensbedrijf in Frankrijk, is het daarmee eens.

Ze zei: "Deze beelden zijn verontrustend, niet omdat het een voorbeeld is van extreme maar zeldzame verschrikkingen die mogelijk zijn in Britse varkenshouderijen, maar eerder omdat het niet zeldzaam is. Deze video's laten zien hoe het leven is bij het werpen van zeugen en biggen in wat, voor zover ik kan onderscheiden, een vrij gemiddelde Britse overdekte varkenshouderij is. Ik zie hier een standaardpraktijk en dat is wat ons allemaal zou moeten motiveren om beter te eisen".
