IFAW’s research report, Disrupt: Wildlife Cybercrime – Uncovering the scale of online wildlife trade, highlights the scale and nature of the online trade in protected live animals and animal products, as well as the threat this trade poses to their survival. The latest in a long line of research, this report details the challenges and opportunities faced by conservationists, governments and the private sector in putting an end to wildlife cybercrime.
Our research covered a period of six weeks in 2017 and looked at online wildlife trade in France, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom. IFAW’s expert researchers uncovered thousands of endangered and threatened live animals and their body parts offered for sale online, revealing that reptiles, birds, ivory and suspected ivory are all widely available. In total, researchers found 5,381 advertisements and posts spread across 106 online marketplaces and social media platforms, cataloguing 11,772 specimens worth US $3,942,329 million.
