Animal Nepal Kathmandu Valley dog breeding status report 2021
On the occasion of International Dog Day, Animal Nepal shared a few findings from our Kathmandu Dog Breeding Status Report 2021. Breed dogs are becoming increasingly popular in Nepal and the demand is driving the dog breeding industry, which is completely unregulated. Animal Nepal urges all breeders, buyers, sellers and duty bearers to think about the implications of prioritizing profit, status and fashion over the welfare of animals.
Some of the findings were: 56.7% of breeders have no knowledge of animal welfare, 90% of the breeders said the main incentive for dog breeding was money, 93.3% of sellers sell puppies under 8 weeks of age, 59.6% of buyers had little to no information about the breed before buying, 96.6% of buyers had little to no knowledge about the breeding industry, 86.7% of sellers do not have license to sell live animals. This is just a small sample of our findings and the full report will be published shortly.
World Elephant Day 2021 - Refuse To Ride
Tiger Tops have been paving the way for sustainable tourism in Nepal since early sixties, by connecting tourists to authentic wildlife experiences. As part of their journey of discovery and improvement, in 2015, Tiger Tops became the first resort in Nepal to stop elephant rides and keep their elephants chain free. On this World Elephant Day, Animal Nepal urges everyone to Refuse To Ride and help build a world where all elephants can live a life of dignity and respect, free from abuse and exploitation.
Our Animal Birth Control program in Lumbini continues
Our Animal Birth Control program in partnership with Dogs Trust Worldwide continues in Lumbini. We have successfully spayed/neutered and vaccinated 67 dogs so far for the month of July.
Animal Birth Control program in Lalitpur
D Pet Shop and Maya Ko Chino are local businesses based in Jhamsikhel and for a long time they have been taking care of the street dogs in their community. We really love their dedication and we are so happy to be able to help them take care of their four legged friends. Kaley, Zeby and New Kali are community dogs and today they went back to their carers after being neutered, spayed and vaccinated against rabies. Please do remember to say hi to them if you ever visit these places. Thank you Help Animals India for supporting our Animal Birth Control program.
Birth control program for cats in Lalitpur
This month, we spayed/neutered and vaccinated 7 cats and 6 dogs as part of our Animal Birth Control program. Although not as visible as dogs, Nepal has a sizeable stray cat population whose plight deserve as much attention as those of dogs. In fact, cats can give birth up to 4 times a year, making it even more necessary to spay them in order to control their population and ensure their welfare. Our cat birth control program is done in partnership with Catmandu Lovers supported by Help Animals India
Care in the community
Care in the community - locals look on while Sushant our vet technician provides treatment for a member of their community. The dog is now being taken care of by them while Sushant will continue to make up follow up visits.
Looking after working animals affected by the pandemic
Many brick kiln donkeys and mules have been affected by the pandemic, such as this group of mules at a brick kiln in Dhading district. Normally, they would be taken back to India after the end of the brick kiln season, but owing to the pandemic, they have remained at the kiln with their owners. Animal Nepal's technical team have been assisiting the owners in caring for their animals through medical services.
