Een groene baby zeeschildpad gevonden op een strand in Sydney in Australië poepte zes dagen na zijn redding plastic. "Helaas kleeft het puin in de oceaan niet alleen aan een dier van een bepaalde grootte of een specifieke diersoort," zei Sarah Male, dierenartsverpleegkundige in het Wildlife Hospital van Taronga Zoo, waar het jong wordt behandeld.

De schildpad woog 127 gram toen hij werd gevonden op Tamarama Beach in Bondi. "We hebben jongen gehad die in de palm van je hand passen en die plastic hebben ingenomen, en we hebben ook schildpadden van 100 kilo gehad die ook zijn gevonden met veel plastic zakken en vislijn en dat soort dingen in hun interne darmsysteem," zei Male.

Taronga Zoo's Wildlife Hospital behandelt tot 80 zeeschildpadden per jaar. "Dus de meerderheid van de verwondingen die we zien, is natuurlijk inname van plastic, vislijn, dat soort dingen. Veel van de andere dingen die we zien zijn bootstakingen", zei Male tegen persbureau Reuters.

Taronga Wildlife Hospital cares for up to 80 marine turtles every year, many of which are admitted with severe injuries caused by entanglement in fishing lines and crab pots, as well as hook and plastic ingestion.

James Griffin MP and the New South Wales Government are rolling out a Plastics Action Plan to help combat this issue. As of 1 June, all lightweight single-use bags were banned in NSW. From November, other single-use plastic items are being banned, including plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls and cotton buds.
